MTS Level 6 - Animal Health Technician - Ambulatory Equine Service / Hospital Float - Veterinary Teachning Hospital - Atlantic Veterinary College
$55,593 - $61,152 per annum, prorated to term as per CUPE 1870

The Veterinary Teaching Hospital requires an Animal Health Technician to provide full-time technical support for the Ambulatory Equine Service (AES) and the VTH Hospital. This position will serve as the primary support for the AES service. When not directly supporting AES, this position contributes to the team of Registered Animal Health Technicians in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital supporting both Large Animal and Small Animal.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide clinical support to AES and other areas of the VTH at various times
- Stocking and maintaining supplies in AES and various areas of the hospital
- Cleaning and maintaining a high standard of cleanliness and biosecurity
- Assisting AES veterinarians by providing proper restraint and handling which can be physically demanding
- Assist in taking radiographs and laboratory samples
- Assist with treatments and diagnostic work-ups
- Completing and assisting with treatment orders for patients
- Monitoring and reporting any abnormalities with patients
- Updating patient billing
- Assist in the maintenance of medical records
- Support veterinary students, technician students, and junior veterinarians participating in post-graduate programs with confidence and compassion
- Support New Brunswick AES service which will include travel and may include overnight stay
- Demonstrated ability to perform necessary nursing skills for the various levels of care required
- Work schedule will include irregular hours and may include nights and holidays
- On-call shifts in the Large Animal Hospital are a requirement
- Other related duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be a graduate of a recognized Animal Health Technician program from a recognized facility
- RVT designation is required
- 3 plus years of experience working in a clinical setting with large animals, and must have current experience handling and working with horses and companion animals
- A minimum of 3 years of experience in an equine-focused, ambulatory practice or other relevant experience is required
- Demonstrated ability to perform necessary nursing skills for the various levels of care required with large animals including venipuncture, catheter placement, patient monitoring, patient preparation for large animal surgical/medical procedures, technical assistance with large animal surgical/medical procedures
- Must have positive and willing attitude and able to provide excellence in Client Services
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills, excellent oral and written communication skills
- Demonstrated reliability and self-motivation
- Demonstrated organizational skills in multi-tasking, time-management, and adaptability
- Demonstrated ability to work well on a team
- Strong computer skills with demonstrated ability in Windows and iOS Operating Systems
- Previous experience with computerized medical records is required, with preference to applicants with knowledge of RxWorks and SmartFlow
