Background: This scholarship was established by the Auxiliary of the Protestant Family Service Bureau in memory of former member, Louise Haszard. The Ladies Auxiliary of the Protestant Family Service Bureau was established in 1959 to augment the financial relief program then administered by the Bureau. While the Bureau dealt with providing groceries, fuel and shelter to those in need, the Auxiliary helped to provide clothing, bedding and furniture when needed. The group was comprised of two members from each of the Atlanta Protestant churches. Finances used by the Auxiliary were derived from the sale of clothing and from donations. This enabled the Auxiliary to develop and maintain many worthwhile projects and to help people and families in need. The most notable and long lasting project of the Auxiliary was the Christmas Shop for low income families where the Auxiliary supplied help at Christmas time for up to 700 children every year for 40 years. It was a project that the Auxiliary members took great pleasure working at. Other projects were a free dental care for children and adolescents not covered by Government, a Share our Books program, help for day care and day camps, etc. During those 40 years of service to others there were many very capable chairpersons and presidents who led the Auxiliary to carry on this work of the Bureau who by this time had advanced to become more of a counseling Bureau and was re-named the PEI Family Service Bureau. One very devoted member was Louise Haszard who passed on in 1984. In her Will the Auxiliary inherited a sum of money with the stipulation that it should be spent on children who needed help. After many years of service, the Auxiliary will disband in 2008. They chose to grant their remaining funds to support students at BCA who plan to work in the fields of education, health and/or social services.
