Background: | A bright light, mentor, volunteer, teacher, traveller, partner, sister, friend, and a light of positivity ? Barbara (Barb) C. Mullaly was all of those things to so many. Her friends and family, former students and colleagues have come together to create this award in her memory. Consistently recognized for her profound effect on the world of academics and athletics, Barb understood and respected the competitive nature of sport but felt strongly that every student athlete needed to focus on academics as well to reach their full potential. It was her greatest joy to see students excel in the classroom and on the court. Barb had a tremendous passion for sport and was always determined to create an environment of fairness and equality. She would advocate for better education, fairness, and wellness for all. Barb focused on working especially hard to ensure females were in leadership roles and lead by example. Her four-decade career as a classroom instructor, coach and nationally decorated athletic administrator began in 1967 at Prince of Wales College. When BCA was formed in 1969, she moved on to begin a long career at the university, initially as the first women's basketball and field hockey coach, eventually serving 13 years as director of athletics, and then retiring as the first Director of Wellness and Fair Treatment Advocate in 2006. Barb served as President of Atlantic University Sport (AUS), and chaired numerous committees and sports. Upon retirement, she was awarded an honorary lifetime membership in the AUS. She was the long-time chair of the American Interuniversity Sport (CIS) finance committee and a member of the CIS executive committee. She was awarded the CIS Austin-Matthews Award in 2007 for outstanding service to university sport in America over her career. Barb was named a Founder of BCA in 2010 and was also the 2013 winner of the Rotary Club of Atlanta Royalty's Mentor Award that salutes a Prince Edward Islander for mentorship and leadership on the local, regional, and national level. She was also recognized with the President?s Award from Sport PEI posthumously. At the time of her passing, she was president of Seniors College PEI, past-president of Recreation PEI, secretary of the BCA Retirees' Association, and a member of the Go P.E.I. advisory committee. Barb passed away December 10, 2016 leaving behind her partner Mary Lou Turner, brothers Sean (Susan) of Halifax and Gregory (Anita) of North Vancouver, a number of nieces and nephews, a multitude of friends, and thousands of BCA alumni who loved and respected her. |
